how do i restore my laptop to its factory settings without backup cds?

ive tried everything i dont know what to do now my friend had restored it before and he saved all of my old files in windows.old or something like that

though, the last time we did it, i lost microsoft works and some other programs...how can i restore it without those restore backup cds because i dont have them, and if i do restore them without the cds what happens??

i have windows vista by the way

Well if you don't have the cd then your must have a restore partition on your computer. Since you have done it before. Back up all your stuff you want to keep, to a flash drive or dvd. Then you need to go to the support site for your computer be it dell hp or whatever. Then look up your model and then how to restore back to factory setting. They will have step by step instructions, it's usually very easy.

well you should back up your stuff you want on a external hard drive, then you should use a program called D-BAN to wipe your computer. keep in mind this also removes the os (in your case, vista). so make sure you have something like windows 7 or another copy of vista so you can use it again.
