Question:
Is there anywhere to buy a new, low-performance laptop?

I have a great desktop system at home that I purchased a year ago, but I really could use some mobile productivity as well. The thing is, all the laptops I see have many more features than I need, adding to the price and decreasing the battery life. I'm looking for something like this:

low energy processor (low frequency, dual core is bonus but unnecessary)
Integrated video (no gfx card)
512 MB or 1 GB memory
60GB+ hard drive
Wireless card
CD-R/DVD drive
long-life battery
15.4" or so widescreen display

...and that's about it. No need for a webcam, Windows Vista, nice GFX card, Core 2 duo processor, or anything like that. All I'm going to use it for is browsing, word processing, maybe listening to music on headphones, and some programming using an editor like vim.

So is there anyone out there that sells low-end laptops like this? I'm sure that a 5-year-old laptop would have plenty of performance for what I need, but I would like the benefit of advances in energy efficiency.

Only place you can get that, is a used computer store

Check out Marketpro Computer Shows. They have shows in most states and have vendors with new, used and refurbished laptops from $100 and up. Go to their website and find when and where they have shows in your area. They also have hardware, sofware, ink and just about any computer item you could want.

eBay. Or any cheap laptop from a store. You can get one from Wal-Mart for $500.
