XPS 16 and DV6T are some breadwinners for both companies. I had a tough time chosing between my XPS 13 and 16, but in the end I went with 2 laptops, DV7T (Huge screen gaming Monster) at roughly 700$ 6-7 months ago SXPS (Maxed out EVERY POSSIBLE THING 998$) 1340 small Beautiful powerhouse slash to pick on mack owners with its looks ++++ at local Coffee shops. The XPS systems are the most ergonomic computers EVER, light up keyboard, every single bell and whistle top of the line systems (Go and touch one yourself at a physical store and compare how that baby feels to every other laptop you can, you will surly understand who's who in the laptop market) DV6T and DV7T are the Cheapest Gaming laptops, Dont be fooled by the price, these things can run over most 3000$ gaming computers with ease, only make sure you go with the ATI 4650 GPU upgrade and your set for Crysis gaming, but the standard 4530 will keep the laptop running at 27-28c on your lap while networking and word processing and 44c on your lap while Throttling them to the absolute limit, the XPS 16 should be almost the same because the after AMD acquired ATI chips they became known for running cool and reliable. Toshiba isnt in the spotlight, but their laptops do enjoy the Lowest return rates for all of 2009, I gave my old Toshiba QOSMIO 35-600 to my stepfather, 3 year old comp and he wont trade it for anything, not even a brand New HP ENVY I offered him for Christmas (Toshiba Qosmio line is THAT GOOD) HP customer support/Warranty is believed to be Number 1 and 2 since 2nd quarter 2009 (Sony and HP are currently fighting for number 1 Customer/Warranty Support), Mac and Dell are somewhere LAST place. If I where you, I would look into the DV8T DV7T or if you want to wait, I hear Dell will make one of their 17 inch laptops True Multi Touch... Thats when Im gonna sell this one and get that (As long as its ATI and i7 inside) Toshiba Qosmio (EU models) are the cream of the Crop but at 1500 and up... the 13 inch HP ENVY if you want small screen 2nd laptop (1400 and UP) 15 inch ENVY 1800-2500$ (Direct competitor to XPS but company has far better warranty customer support) if you want that 15-16 size screen. If anything, just dont get mac and Make 100% sure there is an ATI OR Nvidia Sticker on the laptop.

OK, seriously, with those laptop have, let say powerful graphic card, but they not support DirectX 11, that mean they aint going to b tech proof for a while. Dell and HP prob last 3 years, seriously, and u are gamers, i dont think u want anything under 1K dollars. The dude above me dont know wat discrete is, so he spwn shiet. Discrete = dedicated, same with separate GPU. Anyway, get something that u think will run smooth with ur game now, then get a better laptop 3 years later. I guess they going to put some better GPU, like the 5xxx series of ATI atm. :]

Im going to be blunt. Dell is garbage. Hp is not much better. If you want a computer that will last, get a Toshiba, Apple, Sony, or Gateway. Toshiba being the best. Make sure its a intel dual core 2.2 or higher, at least 4 gigs of ram, and If your planning on doing any gaming it must have a DEDICATED Graphics card. Descrete, integrated and built in graphics cards are terrible. Dells last on average 2-3 years, Hps are about the same. Cheap parts means a cheap computer, which means crappy parts and a short life. Gateway Fx series will give you the most bang for the buck, while Toshibas q gaming laptops will be the best. If your a serious gammer you should look into getting a laptop with what i listed above and at or above 7500rpm.

Look, the Dell XPS is one of the best laptops sold in a store. If you truly want an awesome gaming laptop, I'd recommend the Acer 8750, or an Alien-ware type gaming laptop. Their a little more expensive, but it'll never fail you. Since you want a Dell or HP, I recommend Dell, simply because they are reliable, heavy duty, and have some great features. HP is more of a picture/movie company type laptops. I hate HP with a passion. Right now, all laptops have Windows 7 installed. I love it. Vista sucks, Macs a joke, and Linux is harder to operate than Windows. I recomend the Dell.

Between those two, the dell is better. What you should do is see if you could get the HP dv8t Quad Edition. The recomended config has the same specs as the dell, has an 18.4" screen, and costs $1,729 USD 1,919.83 AUD. I didn't see it on the HP australia site, but here's the link.
