Touchpads have a cursor lock that suspend the use of the touch pad but allow you to use a mouse. Ensure that the cursor lock is not on. That lock is a thin strip just about the touch pad. Usually, it will light up when it's turned on. If you have that lock in the off position then I would not recommed that you go probing inside your laptop to relsove this issue. You should take your laptop to a qualified tech for repair. That laptop has to be disassemble to resolve any physical problem with the touch pad. You will overwhelm yourself with all the little pieces of computer parts and create a larger and more costly problem for yourself.

Hello, try follwoing:

Troubleshoot the Hardware

When dealing with problems involving touchpad or track point tracking or responsiveness, it is a good idea to make sure the device is clean, and in the proper operating environment.

To clean the touchpad, wipe it off with a soft cloth, dampened with rubbing alcohol.

If the track point cap is dirty or sticky, replace it.

Touchpads work best in a temperate, dry environment. Any excess of moisture, heat, or cold can result in poor performance. Problems can be caused by factors often overlooked, like dirty or sweaty hands.

If the notebook has both devices, check the responsiveness with the other device.

If both are failing in the same manner, it is mostly a software issue.

Troubleshoot the Software

Shut Windows down.

Power the unit on, and start tapping the F8 key. Keep tapping the key until you get the Windows Startup Menu.

Choose Safe Mode from the list.

Once in Safe Mode test, the device to see if it is working.

If the device works in Safe Mode, but not in normal Windows mode, it may be a software issue.

If this is the case, open up my computer and go into control panel.

Open Add/Remove programs, and remove any mouse related software listed here.

Reboot the computer.

If it still does not work, right click on My Computer, and choose Properties.

Click on the Device Manager tab, and make sure View Devices By Type is selected at the top. (NOTE: If you are running Windows 2000, Device Manager can be reached by clicking on the Hardware tab.)

Look for a category named Other Devices. If it is there, click the plus next to it, and remove all devices listed under it. Remove the device by clicking on it once to highlight it, then click on the remove button at the bottom.

Now Look down through the list and find the Mouse category.

Remove any devices listed below it by highlighting the device, and choosing remove at the bottom.

Reboot the computer.

If the two pointing devices stop working after removing the mouse driver. Just use the Windows key on the keyboard to bring up the start menu. Now use the arrow keys to highlight Shutdown on the menu. Press the Enter key to select Shutdown from the list.

Power the unit back on, and let it boot up to Windows normally.

When it gets back to Windows, the New Hardware Wizard should appear and load the required drivers for the mouse.

Test the device now.

Few of the laptops have an option to turn OFF the mouse pad functionality. It is fn F7 for Acer. Check which function is it in your laptop. Generally it is printed on the function key itself.

If you have a DELL, then call DELL, it's BROKE.

You might have accidently turned off the touchpad software or driver. Use the RESTORE section of SYSTEM TOOLS in the ACCESSORIES folder of your Program Files.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Many laptops have a function key to activate/deactivate the touchpad. It's the small icon on one of the "F-keys", I think F7 or F8 or somewhere in that area. The icon looks like a little touchpad. Just press Fn+THAT_KEY, and it should re-activate the touchpad for you.

If you happen to have a newer model dell, check your top row of function keys, etc and look for a key with an icon of the touchpad with an "x" through it. If you push this button it will turn your touchpad back on.

On a Toshiba, if you look at F5, you will see it is a Touch Pad Enable/Disable hot key. Just press it to restore your Touch Pad. Typically, you will have to press it twice - once to bring up the menu, once more to change the setting.

A bigger hammer?

ok, kidding. I hate those things. You might open it up and see if there are any wires pulled loose behind the touch pad. But be careful, they don't leave a lot of extra room in there.

you can ask the company if you can get it replaced. other than that it won't work and it looks like you are going to have to get a mouse or a new laptop.

I really don't think you can. Best thing is to have it fixed by a computer repair place.
