prova's right, my vista hp laptop woulnt boot if my printer is attached, so try to unplug everything, or try booting with out battery, just charger, or in linux from linux.com, get the puppy one, small download

Do you hear any intro sound effects when it completes booting? I had a Toshiba Satellite. When you say the screen is dark, do you mean that the screen is absolutely dead (no power to the screen), or just the semi-blackness of the boot screen? What I would do in your case is hook up your laptop to an external monitor (I believe your laptop has a VGA port), then I can tell you more what might be the problem.

Try booting from a CD. Find or burn the installation CD and put it in, then try to boot. If you still have the problem, it's a hardware issue and you probably need to take it to a shop.

If the bios doesnt come up it has to be the CMOS battery. trying buying a new one and replaceing it.

if the bios comes up more than likely it is the harddrive if it doesn't boot

try holding down the function key and hitting the up arrow on your keyboard a few times (to bring the brightness up)
