One minute I was listening to music, and the next it just stopped, so I checked the device manager and everything under the "sound, video and game controllers" has a yellow exclamation mark next to it.

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drives
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller
Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter
Microsoft Kernel DLS Synthesizer
Microsoft Kernel DRM Audio Descrambler
Microsoft Kernel GS Wavetable Synthesizer
Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device
Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer
Microsoft Streaming Clock Proxy
Microsoft Streaming Quality Manager Proxy
Microsoft Straming Service Proxy
Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver
Video Codecs
Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)

I'm not sure where the Microsoft stuff came from, as before I restarted my Laptop none of those things were on the list, but the Vinyl AC'97 is the one I use for sound output, I tried updating and reinstalling the driver but it's not worked at all.
The laptop won't even let me do a System Restore as it keeps saying it can't be completed. I'm ripping my hair out here guys, need some advice.
I've not installed any hardware or software so I'm not sure why all the drivers suddenly stopped working.
There is no audio output detected, and it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" but it wont update the driver when I try!

Argh :(

Try a a restart, as said.

If that doesn`t work you need to go to your computer manufacturer`s support site to download the drivers.

1. download the latest sound driver for you laptop from internet

2. Reboot the laptop in safe mode.

3 remove all the entries under sound.

4. reboot the computer again and install from the downloaded driver. some times the driver will get picked from the old location, make sure the date on the driver ( device manager - device properties) is different after loading.

Good Luck.

ps. if u can update the laptop model i'll be able to guide you better,.
