Question:
Whats the best laptop for an engineering student?

I am currently studying engineering and I have an older HP laptop. It gets very hot without the extra fan I have on it (which is a hassle and makes it pretty bulky) and it does not last long at all without the charger. I would like a laptop that is able to run large programs smoothly and quickly or at least best as it can. I have Microsoft office and it runs just fine, but since I put solid works on it, it's incredibly slow. I would prefer a PC over a Mac. I'm also a big fan of HP's but definitely would not turn down a different brand. Any suggestions would be great! Thank you!

Two good ASUS that can handle what you want.

These two HP can do the same for you. Just customize the CPU up to an A8 or a A10.

Buying advice

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate. My experience with them are limited because the few I worked on made me think they were designed in such a way as it would take a blow torch and a jack hammer just to disassemble them.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Companies like Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided at all cost because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap causing units to fail early leading to repairs that should not have been needed. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Choose wisely.

computers are not about the BRAND! their about the parts. this question is hard to answer beacuse you havent given much to go on besides you need it for engineering. i'm not sure if this involves 3d modeling applications like 3ds max (nevermind i looke up soilid works)or anything so i will give you a quick rundown on what to look for

CPU: at least an Intel Core i5 CPU, which is capable of increasing its clock speed dynamically when you need more performance. Power users should settle for no less than Core i7 system, preferably a quad-core chip.

RAM: When it comes to memory, or RAM, even the cheapest notebooks have 4GB these days so don’t settle for less. If you can get a system with 6 or 8GB, you’ll be better prepared for high-end applications and lots of multitasking.

Hard Drive: For most users, a fast drive is more important than a large one. If you have a choice, go for a 7,200-rpm hard drive over a 5,400-rpm unit. Even if you have several movies and games on your hard drive, a 320GB should provide more than enough space, but 500GB or 750GB drives usually don’t cost much more. I suggest a larger one or getting a portable external hdd for your design fils and a backup.

Flash Cache: Any Ultrabook and some other notebooks come with 8, 16 or 32GB flash caches you can use to increase performance. While not as fast as an SSD, a flash cache will help boost load and boot times while allowing you to store all your data on a large hard drive.

Solid State Drives (SSDs): These drives cost quite a bit more than traditional hard drives and come with less capacity (usually 128 to 256GB), but they dramatically improve performance. You’ll enjoy faster boot times, faster resume times, and faster application open times. Plus, because SSDs don’t have moving parts such as mechanical drives, failure is much less of an issue.

Display: The more pixels you have, the more content you can fit on-screen, and the sharper it will look. choose a laptop with a higher pixel count 1600 x 900 or 1920 x 1080 —always go for the highest res you can get. You’ll see more of your applications clearer. Full HD panels (1920 x 1080) cost about $150 more than your typical display, but are worth the splurge, especially on larger screens.

Graphics Chip: a discrete graphics processor from AMD or Nvidia (which has dedicated video memory) will provide better performance when it comes to the most-demanding applications. i cant say how much graphics memory you will need but at least 2gb for modeling.

Battery: Make sure you get the maximum capacity battery that is available and possibly search online for extended batteries.

make a smart choice when you buy, DONT go to best buy for your computer. i suggest going to a computer repair shop and talking it over with the techs about what your requirements are and maybe they will help you with your decision. the best way to make an informed decision when making a big purchase like a computer is to educate yourself as much as possible before buying. dont let someone sell you something your not sure you need or is not enough for what you need. best of luck :)

Asus has many models which are going really good in the market these days because of their superior performance. I came across one of the model which is really good for different tasks. It also has the capability to perform really well. You'll be interested on this actual user review, talking about actual good performance on this laptop:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R2ZNKVJBYIO0SE/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B009F1JL5A&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=daieom-20

Also it is strong in its technical features as well which includes Intel Core i5 3317U 1.7 GHz Processor and 4 GB DDR3 1600 MHz SD-RAM for fast and efficient multitasking. It has storage with 500GB 5400RPM Hybrid Hard Drive with integrated 24GB Solid-State Drive. It has portable 14" 16:9 HD (1366x768) LED backlight glare panel. And it has Windows 8. So overall it is really nice option available in the market for which you can go for. But if you want to see others than see the list here for best selling laptops:
