Question:
HP/Vista - Can't update Health Check or BIOS?

Hey, all.

I'm running an HP Pavilion dv9000 with Windows Vista (32-bit) and lately I've noticed a couple of nuisance issues cropping up. I'm not sure whether they simply exist to annoy me or if they might come back to bite at me later. Any advice is much appreciated.

HP Health Check has found a couple of updates for me, which it identifies as being "critical". One is a BIOS update and the other is an update for Health Check, itself. However, I've been unable to run the updates. They are now months old, at least, and still sitting there. I can neither use them nor rid myself of them. I don't know whether they are a problem or if I should just ignore them.

When attempting to run the Health Check update, I click the green arrow, then the link to install the update from HP. I provide administrative approval and a dialogue box comes up to tell me to click OK and RUN when security warning crops up. However, said warning never comes. Instead, a box opens with the title "0% of sp41377.exe from ftp.hp.com Completed" and, after a few seconds, it identifies itself as being non-responsive, but doesn't even prompt me to quit the program. It just sits there and sits there until I close it.

When I attempt to run the update for BIOS, it tells me after I provide administrative approval that there is a "Microsoft JScript runtime error", whatever that means. 8\

I tried to get the updates manually through the HP website, but there were so many different product numbers and update versions that I didn't know which was right and I was afraid to install the wrong thing and mess up my system.

My current BIOS version is F.37.
My current version of HP Health Check is 2.3.0.2.
So far as I can tell, both of these are from 2007, so it makes sense that they might be out-of-date. I just can't figure out how to update them.

Also, I noticed that, when using the Task Manager to close the malfunctioning window, it says "Internet Explorer is not responding". I do not have Internet Explorer installed; I'm a Firefox person. I tried installing IE v.8 to see if that would remedy the issue, but when I attempted to run the installation file, it told me it couldn't proceed because a newer version of IE was already installed. I mean, that doesn't even make sense. How could there be a newer version? This one is supposed to be the latest and greatest, right? That's why it's all over their site. I can't even find an older version available for download.

Again, any advice is much appreciated.

I had exactly the same problem you're talking about. Goggle "Download the required sp41377.exe" for a link to the mytopfiles.com website.

This has sorted this problem for me just now.

Start with the BIOS, look at the update numbers and see if they are the same as yours if they are then the reason it can not install is it is there already. if it is different then download it and SAVE to your computer then run it from the saved file to see if it will then over write the system in use.

Similar to the BIOS I would then look at the health check update and do the same download to file then try the install.

As for the IE problem you may have to go to your add and remove box to remove the IE from the system look in windows components to see if the IE is still asked for and there you can stop it.

You can also disable it in the start up.

It seems that your update manager is trying to connect using a version of I.E. not Firefox.

Look in Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features and make sure you have I.E. installed (it's usually installed by default).

Un/reinstall it, restart open/close I.E. and try againâ˜ș
