These are my impression for laptops: Dell is a not a bad choice. Sony also has good reputation. Lenovo is a good brand for Laptop too (it was IBM's ThinkPad laptop line sold to Lenovo.) Lenovo's design is boring, but durable machines for laptops. The brands I don't like are Toshiba and Acer. They tend to brake and have more problems than others. Apple has a total different operating system, but their machines are fine too, plus the cool design to boot!

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m since 2006 and I still love it. I had some problems with the recording function at the beginning, then I found a solution. So far it has the shortest stand-by recovering time than any other laptops I've seen so far- which is a great feature for me.

In my opinion it would be a Macbook Pro. Not only can you run windows ( Xp, Vista and the new Windows beta ) on this machine on a Bootcamp Partitioned drive, but the Mac OS is easy to use and configure ...and Apples support is rated the best in the industry ...after 9 straight years.

And Apple is the only company on the planet that makes the whole widget, ( HW as well as SW )

You will get a range of answers to this question, as everyone has their own good and horror story about laptops and support.

FWIW, go to Costco and buy the one that suits your needs the best. They have support in addition to the laptops brand, and do the best you can.

Unfortunatly, these days, brand names are almost irrelvant, cause they all use the same parts anyway, and all the customer support options stink, so just make the best use of your money possible.

Most people are going to say "blah blah apple is the best". Ya if you are willing to spend $1500 on a laptop. Dell is by far the leader in quality, affordible laptops that do the job. Trust me. I just bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 and its incredible. I guess it all depends on how much you are willing to spend
