Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000,with windows xp home edition service pack 2. Somewheres along the way I got message that the program was corrupt and needed to be uninstalled then reinstalled. I talked to my friend who said to get rid of it all together. I have gone to control panel and tried to uninstall it twice. First time it got down to 2 seconds left and locked up the puter. It even stopped the clock! Poked the off button, but when I restarted pc was acting weird and wouldnt let me back on the net to ask you puter whiz people for help. *&%$E#W!!!! That was first time I had to restore pc back to where I started tinkering with it. Managed to get the darn thing going again, tinkered with it & had it working better than before it crashed so tried a second time to uninstall it with same result!!! Its still on puter but have the "On Access Scan" disabled. HELP! Both myself and puter thank you in advance on this one! Myself cuz its driving me nuts n puter cuz it wants to survive any of my future meltdowns INTACT!!!!

Recovery can be a real pain- the best way to uninstall McAfee is to download The Piriform CCleaner from Piriform.com when you run it there is an icon that say "Tools" then you can uninstall programs with it. I used it to uninstall McAfee off of my Dell Demension 3000 (XP service pack 2) and it worked out. Running without a Virus Program is suicide though so I recommend installing AVG's free proctection, Running the Windows Malware scan, then uninstall using CCleaner. there are other programs but this one is free, a non-trial, and additionally can clean your registry, securely delete the recycle bin, free space, and various programs, including Firefox; IE, Safari, etc. which frees up some space and can make the computer run a wee bit faster. Also try their other programs such as defragler (also speeds up the computer) and Recuva (recovery tool)
