USB Mouse not working?

Question

I have bought a Compaq laptop, however whn I connect my old USB mouse, it is not detecting. It gives me an error saying "USB device not detecting". Should i install some kind of drivers? If yes, from where cos I have checked the CD i got with my laptop but could not find it...Pls help...
