Torn between these two.

Macbook Pro 15 (2.93Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 320GB Serial ATA @ 7200, 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB).... about $3000

Sony Vaio FW (2.93 Intel Coreā„¢ 2 Duo Processor T9800, 6 GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 4GB+2GB), 400 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive [5400 rpm]).... about $2000

Help me out. This laptop has to last me awhile. Iv been a pc user for a long time and have grown kind of weary, Mac is looking pretty good. It will mostly be used for web surfing, writing papers, Music production, photo and a bit of video editing. Mostly web surfing & music production.

It comes down to preference but... ask yourself, why are you paying $1000 more for a smaller hard drive, less RAM and a crappy or non-existent video card (the Mac)?

That's mainly why I don't buy Macs. They're overpriced. Now, Macs can get viruses just like PCs so there's really not that many advantages. For your purposes you may need the Mac for your music and photo stuff, but $3,000 is a crock for that weak computer. Even the Sony is overpriced. But I'd rather pay for a Sony than a Mac.

Dave S - Do some research. They do get viruses. http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6126_102-0.html?forumID=10&threadID=173188&messageID=1908704

Google searches make people more knowledgeable. Really, they do.

As for lasting power... I have a PC laying around in my attic from the 1990s. It still runs. It's slow as hell but it runs. This crap about Macs lasting this long and PCs lasting this long is all not true. If you take care of ANYTHING, whether it be a car or a computer, it will last longer.

So I have a MacBook Pro and they are amazing. I'm not a fan boy or anything because I use a lot of PCs at school and have one at home. But they are very sturdy and so easy to use. You won't be nearly as frustrated because it takes you less than 5 minutes to get it out of the box and on the web. Every other time it takes a considerably smaller amount of time from turning it on to being online. The security with the no virus thing is quite true and you can go to apple.com and download a free virus protection program. And if you ask just about anyone at best buy or a similar store they will tell you that when it comes down to video editing or music production nothing comes close to apples products. They are more expensive but they are "supposed" to last longer. The estimated life for a MacBook Pro is about 6 years. And the estimated life for a PC is 4. And lastly Safari 4 is the newest version of apples web browser its much faster than IE and has a lot of interesting features and it is faster on a Mac.

So my final point is...MacBook Pro. Easier faster and better suited to what you want to do.

i just bought a sony vaio fw 47 today and i'm completely happy with my decision. i bought it for 1800 $ and i got the one with the blu ray reader and the 1080p screen. its fast, looks amazing and has great features, ddr3 ram would be cool, but its not exactly a deal breaker. its that much faster than any mac book in that price category. they are both beautiful laptops though no can argue that the mac would still be prettier. ofcoure now mac would no longer be constrained by the 'no compatibility' argument due to boot camp but i still chose the fw since it was hugely more powerful and could even give the macbook pro 15" a run for its money when it comes to looks. you would also benefit from that pwer when editing photos but that seems to be the only hardware intensive use of yours. i reccomend the FW!

If your going to do audio, image and video editing I'd look no further than the Macbook Pro.

You can save a lot of money and by the RAM separately. Also, go with the 2.66Ghz to save another $300 - the speed, unless your doing major HD video editing and compositing, won't be much different.

If you buy the Sony, you'll have to buy inferior editing software and you'll end up spending the same if not more.

Oh, and Macs DO NOT get viruses just like PCs. Never have.
