Hi,

I recently installed ubuntu linux 12.04 from a live cd onto a Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB (the Ubuntu installer created new partitions out of the free space on the Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB drive) with the hope of loading Ubuntu up from the Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB drive when it was connected to the PC during startup but windows doesnt recognise the Ubuntu Installation and the startup freezes on a Grey/Black Screen

Any help would be appreciated

Other Details

Laptop: HP Pavillion dv7-6108tx with Windows 7 Home Premium Preinstalled by Manufacturer
Hard Drive: Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB (with 1 data partition and two linux (Ubuntu 12.04) partitions)

See if EasyBSD will boot it. I personally prefer EasyBSD to GRUB.

I believe your Western Digital Passport is a USB Drive, 2.0 at best, if that is true, Windows can Not Setup USB Drives as portable Bootable Drives. If yuo have enough Memory Resources, Create a Virtual Ubuntu with a Oracle VM VirtualBox.

There's nothing opening a window would aid during a thunderstorm, lightning is not any more likely to come in however rain certain is. Your roof is no more prone to be blown off for the duration of a twister either, the open windows do not cut down the stress vastly so don't bother. So the reply to your query isn't any it's not good to go away windows open, it is just pointless.
