Laptop Windows Vista Usb Port malfunction?

There is nothing connected to any of the Usb Ports but ...you know how when you plug a usb in, it makes a sound, and when you take it out, it takes it out.
it keeeps making the in and out noise.
And theres that....small bubble? notice thing that says it doesnt recognize the usb. Nothing is plugged in. i Restarted my computer but it still happens.
i plugged in the usb for my wireless mouse and it started happening, and also said it cant read the mouse software...or something. it wouldnt work.
but other things like my ipod works.

First try unplugging (and removing the battery on a laptop), press the power button for five seconds. Leave it for two minutes and try the USB again.



If that doesn't work...



Restart in Safe Mode*



Open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.



Double click Universal Serial Bus Controllers/USB Root Hubs. Right click each instance underneath and uninstall the drivers. Don't worry, Windows will re-build them.

Restart normally and try again.



*Note: On start up (before Windows loads) keep tapping either F5 or F8 (be aware that some manufacturers use F8 for system recovery!) then use arrow keys to highlight 'Safe Mode with networking' and hit Enter/Return, click on a user account, enter the Administrator password (if you don't know it, there probably isn't one so leave it blank) and hit Enter/Return.

Many of the times that this has happened to me, it has been because I am missing a driver. Drivers are what allow an external device to be detected and run on any computer. So I advise looking online for a driver for the mouse on the company that made the mouse's site, usually download links can be found there, install the driver and you should be good to go.

Refresh the USB Stack



Control Panel - Device Manager - USB Serial Controllers - RIGHT CLICK on EVERYTHING and UNINSTALL

all except the category itself - REBOOT - this refreshes the drive and the USB stack

reinstall the drivers by removing the current driver, it should then recognise as a new harware & install automatically, or if you updated the driver, roll back to original or previous version
