Question:
Failing fan bearing on HP Pavillion DV4 laptop?

I have a HP Pavillion DV4-1431us laptop. I've had it for about 2 years now and then it suddenly started to make this loud noise. I took it in for repair and their exact words were:

"The noise experienced is caused by a failing fan bearing on the internal heatsink/cooling fan assembly. If the fan fails the CPU will overheat and possibly cause system failure and/or data loss and corruption. The heat sink/cooking fan assembly will need to be replaced."

So I have a couple of questions.
1. Do I replace only the fan or do I need to replace the heatsink and fan all together?
2. What exactly do they mean when they say all of this?
3. How long would my laptop last if I don't fix this problem?
4. If I buy the part, would I be able to do it myself?
5. I found some "compatible" fan parts online, not sure if it really is. Here is the link: http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP,Laptop,Part,486844001.aspx

My laptop is the Dv4-1000 series. My p/n is the NU995UA\

Please help. I really need my laptop.

Thank you!

The answer above hit the nail on the head.

To address your specific questions though... first, take a look at this...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01657439

I gave you that link for two reasons. One, to show you the dust that can accumulate in an HP over a relatively short time, causing the issue you are having... and two to show you that the fan is not attached or "on" the heat sink.

So...

1. You would only have to replace the fan. The heat sink is not failing, and it would not be failing, and unless you physically damaged the heat sink by jabbing it with a screw driver or attempted to remove it by force, there will never be a reason to remove it.

2. What exactly do they mean by the passage you quoted? Well, it's kind of a generic response, since there would be no reason why you would need to replace the heat sink. Otherwise, it's rather straight forward. They claim a a failing bearing is causing the noise, and that this will eventually cause the fan to stop. When that happens, the laptop will overheat and shut down when you attempt to use it... probably shutting down while you are doing something important, causing you to lose data.

3. How long? Impossible to say. The fan could stop working tomorrow, or it could stop working a year from now.

4. Well, you could buy the part http://www.laptopcpufan.com/hp-pavilion-dv41120us-laptop-cpu-cooling-fan-p-1611.html There, and follow the instructions at the bottom of the page... but from the questions you have I would have to say you are most definitely not qualified to take apart your laptop and replace the fan. So, would you be able to do it yourself? If you have to ask, then probably not.

5. Where is the question in this one?

Advice.... just like the first answer said... take it to a LOCAL repair shop, and pay to have it done.

When the fan finally fails your computer will get too hot to run. When this happens it is supposed to shut down. When it does it will just cut the power and turn off. It won't give you a warning or go through the normal saving process so you won't be able to save anything. If this happens enough it can cause permanent damage.

Your best bet is to take it to a LOCAL computer shop and get a quote. I can't say how much they will charge but if they are competent they should be able to repair it on site. DO NOT TAKE IT TO GEEK SQUAD/BEST BUY! All they will do is send it out to some repair facility and you will be without your laptop for weeks if not months.

You can try it yourself but if you mess it up you'll just have to put more money into it. Here is the service manual for the DV4, not 100% sure it applies to your model, make sure before you teardown....

Yes, it is normal for the fans to almost constantly run on today's laptops. The CPU runs hotter than earlier versions and take more cooling. The fans should run at an "idle" nearly all of the time and they should speed up as the work load is increased on the CPU and then slow down again as the load is lessened. Should your fans run at high speed all of the time then you either have bad thermal sensor for the CPU or you have a serious heating problem. Either way, you may have to send the laptop back for repairs or replacement. You would have to contact the manufacturer first to get an RMA approval and to give them the opportunity to evaluate the laptop before sending it back.
