In some Dells you can remove the accessory drive (CD/DVD/floppy) and insert a second battery. I'm not sure if the D630 is capable of this, but the earlier model Dells were (ones like the Inspiron 4000/4100's and latitude C600).

Well it depends, how much under $300.00 are you getting this computer for? The reason I ask is that I went out on several legit websites and found brand new laptops with Windows 7, much faster processors, more RAM and way way larger hard drives like 300 GB instead of 60 GB and these laptops were around $350.00. The biggest concern I would have with the laptop you are looking at is that Microsoft is going to stop supporting Windows XP in two years 2014. Usually when that happens it's harder to get companies like AT&T and other internet service provider you with internet access. I know this has happened in the past with other versions of Windows that Microsoft no longer supports. Also a 60 GB hard drive is kind of small. You are using it for "daily use" if you plan to download digital pictures, music, and especially any kind of videos you will run out of room fairly quick. If this computer was more like $150.00 and you just wanted to use it for a year or two and primarily to check your e-mail and surf the web then I would so OK....

Hi,

I agree completely with everything Renee said here, and also have a Lat d630 ... the extra harddrive IS tempting ... but I also found on Amazon a replacement for the original optical drive that is a Dual-layer DVD +/- RW drive, while my system came with a DVDROM/CDRW originally, and I do a LOT of burning.

I end up copying 6+ Gbs lf files onto flashdrives to copy to my desktop system for burning to DVDRs at least once a day, sometimes 4 or 5 times a day. (I do system repairs, sell Craigslist refurbs, and have been dloading and testing linux distros for about 2 years so I can start teaching myself more programming).

G'Luck!!

There is a battery that can be put into the optical drive bay - check eBay. If you have an optical drive in there, you don't HAVE a battery #2 to track the charging status on.

There is also a bay that fits in there that will hold a second hard drive - if you want something to keep backing up your main hard drive, add a lot of extra storage space, or just like having more options on the hardware configuration for your laptop.
