ram is a temporary storage for applications (software) every app is stored on ur hard drive, but when u run it the need sumwhere to store info they will need to use at a later time, that it can access faster than the hdd. ie calculations. its deleted when ur comp is turned off.
so if a calculator on the comp is calculating 5+10(2+3) it would calculate (2+3) store it in ram, do the rest of the calculation then pull it from ram and finish the problem.

RAM is really fast, solid-state, temporary memory in your computer. The processor works much faster than a hard drive can keep up with, so RAM is used to snap data back and forth to the processor instead of waiting for the hard drive, which would make your computer run really slow. It is "volatile", which means it loses its data when you shut the power off, unlike the hard drive. Faster RAM, and more of it, makes a computer faster, generally speaking.
