Question:
USB ports suddenly start working after not working for two days.?

Suddenly, two days ago, all of the USB ports on my laptop stopped working. I researched a little on the internet and the general consensus was that my motherboard was failing. I have replaced my motherboard before so believed that this could be accurate.

Rather than sorting a new motherboard I went and bought a new laptop. This morning I have turned my old laptop on and everything is working fine. I spent the entire yesterday trying to fix them, attempting every fix that is suggested on the internet, but to no avail.

This morning they seem to have fixed themselves of their own volition. Any ideas why they may suddenly be working, and is this likely to be a temporary thing before they fail again?

This may be as simple as the connection on your motherboard to the USB ports is loose and somehow has come back into contact again. If you can trace the motherboard connection to the USB port on the motherboard, it is sometimes one connection that is branched off into many actual physical plugs. From usage and time they get loose and the solder connection degrades. Do not try and re-solder the connection to the motherboard. Any kind of heat that comes in contact with the motherboard can destroy it. There are cold soldering epoxies you can use that will not damage the motherboard. I've included a couple of sources for products below. I haven't used these products personally but I understand they do work.

Hi Ryan

so for some one who has gone to all the bother in the past of changing a motherboard in a laptop, which is usually not something most would tackle in a life time.

then you say about usb ports becoming dysfunctional and wonder why, how conversant are you with Microsoft products i wonder as 99% of problems connected to computers and especially a laptop are software based. issues which can usually be remedied by re-booting a computer several times as most software from Microsoft since windows ME was capable of self repair even windows 98 seems to have been this kind of issues sometimes.

Get secret agent-bot seek and wreck, advert-conscious, domicile windows Defender, and AVG Antivirus. All are unfastened downloads. acquire them, replace them, and run them. as quickly as nonetheless domicile windows and as quickly as by using "secure Mode". After that in the event that they nevertheless do no longer function suitable, un-set up the USB ports and the DVD force in question, utilising the gadget supervisor and then reboot the computing gadget. this would reload the drivers, they might are transforming into corrupt.

It shouldn't be really a fault on your motherboard - maybe the connection is loose or something making them sometimes work?

If not I would recommend buying new separate ports (if you own a desktop that is).
