I was using HP Dv9000. It has got a Nvidia 7600 go 256 mb.
History:
The graphics card one day got faulty and started giving horizontal lines at the bios level and windows was not booting and giving blue error  screen. However I was able to log on to windows in safe mode.
I'm positive that it got faulty because of overheating.
Now, I am replacing the motherboard and as I opened the laptops, I found that there was no cooling gel sticking to the GPU chip or the heat sink of the chip.
I want to know that If i put some gel at the new motherboards chip, will it be okay. I mean that can all chips support cooling gel. Are these gels conductors or non conductors of Electricity?
Please I need a quick response as my laptop is still open.

Putting the thermal paste on your chips with not hurt your computer at all. In fact, it should have some on there. It is not a conductor of electricity It is only there to draw heat away from the chip up to the heat sink. Hope I could help.

I don't think your laptop was displaying weird lines because of CPU overheating. Basically Laptops and PC's are protected against overheating and when the CPU temperature reaches its max point your computer will shutdown. Seems like you had some problems with graphic unit. Anyway most of today's cpu's don't really need the cooling gel. Sometimes the gel can really make things working even worse. Most likely the cpu cooler sticks enough to the processor unit and no other items are required. If you want to take care of good heating inside your laptop make sure that the cpu cooler is dust free, then everything supposed to be fine.

Um Kamil B, it is GPU the man didnt confuse. GPU stands for Graphic Processing Unit. And you cant say I MEAN that can all chips support cooling gel. It is I THINK . Whats up with the grammar man. Anyway, sure just go and do it.

first off all if it doesnt have thermal paste, thats the problem right there. make sure you add a thin layer of thermal paste to fill in the small microscopic canyons of the GPU but dont put to much or it will actually lower the heat transfer. also make sure the fan is working and clean it from any dust

get the HP .. it has a significantly better useful instruct, better USB ports, a a lot wider array or ports mostly, and centrino is a sturdy sized plus .. i'd actual bypass with the HP ;] EDIT - dell laptops are garbage imho ;]
