Question:
CD/DVD drive problem on Gateway Laptop?

I have a Gateway laptop and it works pretty well. Unfortunately, my dvd drive doesn't work properly. Whenever I put a CD in, it contemplates, and then it asks me to insert a CD and pops out the drive. My computer recognizes the drive, but it still doesn't work.

I talked with Gateway Tech Support, and they said that I should reinstall the drive (I did, it didn't work) and refix the drive (what does that mean?). They also said I should take it to a computer technician to fix it (but I don't have the money), or should try one of those CD/DVD drive cleaners (for dvd players).

I would like to know what you think the best solution would be for a budget of less than 50 dollars, or what you have done to fix the problem. I would also like to know what might be the cause of the problem. Thanks.

I may have the answer to that question.

Try the following:

> If it's not too late, do System Restore, and restore to an earlier point in time, where your CD/DVD Drive worked properly.

> If the above isn't working, then you may have to reinstall your whole Operating System, which can wipe out all your files too though. (might want to back-up your computer before you do this.)

Good luck! Hope this helps. :)

sounds like a hardware issue... not software. see if u can run a laser cleaner cd in it.
