Question:
is it stupid to have window xp rather than vista?
2008-03-07 10:58:02 UTC
i had my toshiba laptop for almost six years and now i have broken screen and a loose screen. so i'm thinking getting Dell Inspiron 1520. the thing is most of programs i use doesn't support window vista, but xp. vista is cool but should i still get xp (i'm more comfortable w/ it) or vista? my father has vista but it always asks questions when he tried to operate something (it's annoying).
i need expert's opinions.
thank you.
ps: dell.com is having a sale for laptops w/ window xp..

I've had vista practically since the day it came out, and in my honest opinion stay with XP. With windows vista you get the better looks, but the performance suffers. There are too many background programs running in vista for protection. It severly slows your computer, it takes at least half a gig of ram just to sit there not doing anything. Also there are still bugs in vista that get really annoying. So i'd keep the XP, vista was realeased before it was ready.

A relatively new programm often has a lot of problems at first. XP has been on the market for... ages and lots of problems have been sorted out. When I see others struggle with Vista I rather wait 2 years untill it becomes stable. The same happened when XP was introduced and Win98... was stable. In time XP will get too old to use, but for now it still functions quite (not always !) good.

Hi, I would really suggest Windows Vista. It has a ton of advantages over Windows Xp. Windows XP looks old and lame compared to Windows Vista.

The thing u r complaining about that Vista asks u to confirm when running some applications is a very important security feature that has been present in Linux/Unix for a long time. It means every time u install some program or make a system wide change u have to allow it to. In Vista unlike windows xp u don't run as administrator so if a virus attacks then it won't have complete access to your system.

Good Luck!

I have xp on one computer and then vista on another, I didnt want to switch to vista. It's not really that horrible, and it's not very different (really at all) from xp. The problems you may run into are:

A slower computer, vista is so "pretty" that is needs more power to run, so dont skimp on that.

You may need to download drivers for your printers/scanners and stuff like that. I had to do this, you just go to the manufacturer website of the scanner for example and search for drivers, they are fairly easy to find and free to download.

All in all, I would prefer to keep xp but then you run into the problem of new programming you may want that is only vista friendly. The best thing to do is probably research the programs/hardware you use regularly and see if there are easy ways for them to be vista compatible. If not, maybe stick with xp until the next time you are ready to buy a computer.

I just got the new Qosmio by Toshiba and it has Vista, and your Dad is correct, it's constantly bringing up windows and asking things. My desktop has XP, and it's much more user friendly for me. But I heard that Microsoft is planning on not supporting XP anymore in the future. I can't say that's true for sure, but i'm trying to get used to Vista. I've had it for nearly 2 weeks and i'm doing fine with it, for now. Good luck!!

A good question, if given the choice I'd rather get XP now and perhaps upgrade to Vista a year later or so.,

Bit hard to say, though I think you'd need to buy a top-end version for it to really be any better than XP. I gather quite a number of Vista users are reverting back to XP.

One advantage of Vista is that it will (/should) be supported for longer.

Absolutely not!

Windows Vista has a number of compatibility issues. If you are not wanting to go to Vista, then I would say don't feel obligated.

My computer is running Vista and I have had nothing but problems with it. I would say stick with XP.

If you really want to try Vista, I would say wait until Microsoft addresses the instability problems it has.

it depends, because vista requires at least 1 gb of ram memory to operate so if you don't have more than that i recommend xp cause vista will be slow

so if your laptop has more than 1 gb then go ahead and use vista but if not it is better to stick wth xp still

I'd rather stick to XP for now since Vista is still in a somewhat beta testing stage since there are still several bugs being worked with.

vista is almost like xp but it has some more features for ease of use and security and xp is good option also ,of course it will take time to get use to vista if you are xp user.

and if you care a lot about your programs and you are sure that there isn't any updated version of those for vista then it is better to choose xp , xp sp2 updated one and xp sp3 are good choice for you and xp sp3 is look like vista but it is still with xp features. for vista you need better hardware than xp and it will use your system resorces more that xp.

If you have the option get XP, all the changes to vista are just "fluff" also the same computer will perform noticeably faster on XP and as you've pointed out there are major compatibility issues with vista.

people resist changes and don't like it....it happen when windows changed for win98 to winxp..people said win98 is good...now vista is here, people say win xp is good.

it depends on use...most program will convert to using vista as Microsoft stop support for win xp in 1 to 2 years time. Vista is very good from security point of view and visual effect.

depends on you..if you have programs you need absolutely necessary and run on xp, use xp...if not migrate to vista...as vista is the future....

XP is fine, Vista is cooler, but has some problems, after all, it did just come out!
2008-03-07 11:10:26 UTC
Vista is WAY better...Unless you have a **** laptop, in which case stick with XP.

There is a compatibility wizzard, you CAN run Xp things, I'm pretty sure.

I run Vista, Its faster then XP for me.

xp is still good but if you think about it vista has too many security issues and they still need to fix some problems with it...go for the laptops that still have xp...

You can always upgrade later so I don't think it matters. A lot of ppl are still using XP so I say if it works for you then get it.
