Question:
What is up with my laptop?

Okk, so my Dell Mini that I just got a few months ago, is acting all crazy. I keep getting pop ups from Wireshark Antivirus, I haven't downloaded it and idk how it got there. (not from the internet, its when I turn on my computer and about a fajillion come up.) and i'll try to open like an application (say i try to open Safari, a little notification comes up and says "Safari application is terminated. Can not open Application, please activate spyware.) so I opened up AVG, and scanned my WHOLE computer, but it said it couldn't find a virus or trojan or anything. Also I cant use any search engines, it always redirects to another page.
HELP ME PLEASE!

The Wireshark Anti virus is actually a scam and a virus in one deadly package. The scam works by pretending to perform a system scan on your system and providing a list of thousands of infections. It will then insist you purchase the full software to remove this, however this is just a ploy so they can take your money.

The virus is even more destructive. It uses temporary files to track your internet browsing, which allows it to steal your data. IT is therefore of up most importance that you remove the virus completely from your system as soon as possible.

You can read about how to remove it here:

http://www.fastspywarefixes.com/rogue-antivirus/wireshark-antivirus-removal-how-to-remove-wireshark-antivirus/

Whilst this virus has been on your system, it has also managed to infect you with the "Search Redirect Virus". This virus is causing your searches to be redirected. Although not as harmful as the Wireshark virus, it does leave your system vulnerable to other viruses and so should be removed.

This is a different kettle of fish though. The virus cannot be removed by conventional means as it infects system files, which a normal anti virus cannot detect. You will need to use a program called ComboFix, which I have used multiple times before to remove this virus. You can get ComboFix and a good tutorial here:

1. Reboot into safe mode with networking. If it does not work, continue anyway

2 .Open Internet Explorer, choose Tools menu and select Internet Options.

3. Click on the Connections tab and then on the LAN Settings button. Uncheck the checkbox labeled Use a proxy server for your LAN under the Proxy Server section and press OK.

4. Then start task manager or process explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx ) and stop all processes that are like combination of random letters. If it fails, continue anyway, or check this guide : http://www.2-viruses.com/remove-wireshark-antivirus for more specific names

5. Start MSConfig and disable all startup entries that launch processes from within your user directory, for example App Data folder... You might need to reboot after this step, to safe mode with networking again.

6. Download good anti-malware tool like spyware doctor or malwarebytes. Scan with it, and delete stuff it finds (if it wont remove it itself).

7. Reboot.

Your Anti-virus seems to be the problem so I recommend you to close it or Uninstall it since you have AVG your per-installed Anti-Virus not important
