Question:
Dell Studio 1440 (14z) fan control?

Alright, I've been trying to get fan control to work on this ****** laptop for weeks now, to no avail.
I've tried i8kgui, which did not allow me to change the fan speeds giving me the error "Cannot change speed on fan 1/2". So I'm assuming that it does not currently support the 1440 (hopefully there are some other 1440 users out there to confirm.)
Next I tried SpeedFan, but once again no availability for fan control, or even the option to access my motherboard settings under the Advanced tab (yes I did select DELL notebook support).
I'm trying to use RivaTuner, but I doubt this will work either, and is very confusing to use.
My BIOS does not have any options to change the fan speed/control options for it. Not a single thing. Is there some sort of modded BIOS I could use to enable this?
If I don't figure this out I'm either going to throw the laptop off a cliff in rage, or re-apply thermal paste / possibly solder the fan in to run at 100% permanently.
The issue I'm having is that the laptop is running far too hot for normal operating conditions, even while under no load. I have a cooling pad hooked up to it at all times now, because without it the laptop would be too hot to use. I'm looking to manually control the fan speed, to set it to a higher speed so it might run a little cooler with the addition of my cooling pad so I can play some older games on the thing.
I also have found no control over the GPU fan, assuming that it's possible.
If someone could please help or give me some tips here as I'm beginning to hate this laptop. It's only a few years old. The fans are not dusty btw

Hi Mike Hoxbig,

Dell BIOS does not have an option to manually change the system fan speed. Third party applications are not recommended by Dell as they may over exert the fan and cause it to fail.

I would suggest that you try cleaning the vents of the system using a can of compressed air. You may also try updating the BIOS of the system. You may download and install the latest version from the link below:

Enter the system Service Tag and click on ‘Continue’. Select the operating system and it will display a list of available downloads.

If this does not help, the fan an heatsink might have to be replaced.

Hope this helps.
