My friend's HP laptop died the other day, in the middle of schoolwork. I determined that it was the hard drive as it would not load the OS and emitted clicking sounds. He took it to Staples (where he bought it just 6 months ago) and they too determined that the hard drive had crashed. He's frustrated that his information is gone but now the issue is getting the laptop running. Staples has sent it to HP where they "will decide whether they're going to replace the hard drive or not". It is still under their 1-year warranty so I'm prepared to annoy the hell out of them if they refuse to replace it free of charge. Does anyone else have experience with HP's customer service for a similar problem?

HP customer service has been good to me

I bought an ancient P4; a 2002 model @ the end of 2007 and

about two months ago I needed missing Ethernet drivers and it took a while to figure out which chipset i have but they responded to all emails and I did finally get the correct driver

their policy concerning HDD is a bit different

they will first have to determine that the drive was actually defective and not damaged due to abuse (dropped, unauthorized modification, static, etc. )

if they determine that the drive is defective, it will be replaced because it really doesn't cost them much as they send the drive back to the MFG.

Im in NZ and used HP support twice, but I am under the impression all their calls get outsourced to India.

When I call, and break through the accent barrier, you kind of have to push them with whatever issue you have to deal with otherwise theyll quickly brush you off with a really dumb answer. Having said that, they do after a while easily agree to take your laptop for repair, and hire a local independent IT firm to work on it for you. This firm will contact you soon after the call.

So HP pays them for the hours, parts and courier fees.

And as expected the IT firms take pride in their work, and courier firms take pride in their packaging.

HP Business support is awesome. They send a box & prepaid shipping label. Turnaround time is awesome.

Acer/Gateway support is really bad. I had to send it my laptop three times because everytime it kept coming back with some new issue. I have paid for shipping three times already!!
