How old is the laptop?

Yes disk cleanup can help slightly by removing all the clutter that windows stores over time from web browsing. It creates temporary files and can clutter it up a bit.

But if its taking longer to boot up it could be an issue with startup programs. Yes if you reinstall windows it will most likely speed up again. Some times malware or virus can slow it down at boot because it is loading background items.

If its a year or more old then it could be full of dust or animal dander , this will plug up the fan and heatsink. Smoking makes it worse as it builds up the tar inside and that makes it sticky and collect more dust. Once it is plugged with dust and debre the fan can not effectively keep the cpu cool and it will become slow as the bios tries to compensate for the heat by reducing the voltage or clock settings of the cpu to reduce the heat.

How often do you clean your browser history? Your computer could be slow due to an overload of unneeded history stored from the browsers. Here is a link to a great program that will help clean out the unneeded files in your computer:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner

If you use more than one web browser, this program can clean them all at one time. It can also clear cookies and caches. There are four sections in the side menu. The first one is a broom labeled Cleaner. That is what will clean your browser history. The next one says Registry. It cleans out fragmented commands left behind by installing programs or applications. I always clear that too. The next one is Tools. You can see the programs you have installed and you can see what programs will run when you start up your computer. When you select Tools....choice Start-up on that list of options. This shows you a list of programs that are always running while your computer is on. If the box is checked, it is running even if you are not using it. This creates a lot of "back ground" issues and can slow other programs. You only need to keep any Anti-virus programs running. Anything else in that list can be opened when you need the program. Just click on it and choose disable to turn off things that are not needed. (I do leave the Google update one on in my system so that I don't have to worry about getting updates when they are ready.)

After you do all that, then run your defragmenter and see if it helps. If it is still slow, you might have a virus, so be sure to scan with an anti-virus if all this doesn't help. Good luck.

I've been a laptop technician for over 10 years. If you observed that any individual is utilising your (wi-fi) Internet connection it is lovely effortless to experiment. Look at your DSL modem or cable modem. It may have an "undertaking" mild that blinks at the same time knowledge is being despatched or bought. If it is blinking like loopy then anything is utilising it to entry the Internet. Stolen WiFi ordinarily occurs while humans purchase their possess wi-fi routers and do not set a protection protocol on them. If your son or brother-in-legislation or whoever mounted the wi-fi router for you, and also you attach it is nonetheless named "Netgear" or "Linksys" or any other company title, then possibilities are they did *no longer* permit wi-fi protection and any one inside 2 hundred' (many times farther) can use your Internet connection any time they desire. Kids love tapping into their neighbor's wi-fi networks to down load song and soiled images/films. After they down load them additionally they percentage those with different humans, this means that that any unlawful undertaking might be traced on your condo and no longer theirs. To permit protection for your wi-fi router open your Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, and so on.) and check out going to such a addresses (just one will paintings): 192.168.zero.a million 192.168.a million.a million If you get a logon reveal the title is "admin" and the password is ordinarily both "admin" or "password" Go to the wi-fi phase and from there you'll entry the protection phase. Make definite protection is enabled. Choose WPA for encryption and installed a key (password). It will have to be a reputation and quantity. While you are in that wi-fi phase, move forward and difference the wi-fi title to anything extra individual. Your different wi-fi instruments (laptops, Xbox, iPhone, Netflix, and so on.) that use the wi-fi connection will have got to reconnect to the brand new community, and use the password. --------------- If a laptop for your community is inflamed with a deadly disease or spy ware it could possibly hog the Internet assets as good. They'll do matters like ship unsolicited mail, or take a look at to contaminate different humans. A well software that's certainly loose, which to do away with those is referred to as Malwarebytes. Do a seek for it and you'll be able to discover it lovely swiftly. It does an high-quality activity at eliminating those matters, even if the pay-for anti-viruses do not paintings.

I recommend you to uninstall the unused softwares.

Also, if you have recovery discs or recovery partition, take the backup of your hard disk and perform recovery, after that you can restore the files from backup.
