What is wrong with my Dell inspiron battery adaptor?

My husband accidentally used my Dell charger on his HP laptop and when I plugged it back into my computer it says "plugged in, not charging". The battery on my computer is healthy, the LED light on the adapter is on, and I have tried turning my computer off to take the battery out and unplugged the adapter and plugged it back into the wall socket after the light went off. I am still getting the error message about the computer not being able to detect the adapter and the "not charging" message. Why is this happening and is there something I can do without having to buy a new adapter?

It is a Dell inspiron N5110.
(I am out of warranty.)

There's a lot that could be happening to your laptop and the battery if it's not charging. Since I don't feel like having to type it all down, I'll provide a website that should help with the problem.

Hi Kort T,

You may try the steps mentioned below to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Check the jack on the AC Adapter and system power for any damage.

2. Try charging with the laptop turned off.

3. Check if it charges when you wiggle the AC adapter.

4. You may also try connecting the AC adapter in a different good known power outlet.

5. Check the status of the AC adapter in BIOS. To enter BIOS, shut down the system and once you power it on keep tapping F2. In the BIOS screen, check AC adapter type. If it shows none, update the BIOS from Dell’s support site. Use the link: http://dell.to/1a3LqMv

Note: Plug your computer to a good, working UPS before you update the BIOS. If you experience a loss of AC power or a significant voltage sag/spike during the BIOS flash, you will either have to buy a new BIOS chip or buy a new motherboard. Ensure that the battery is morev than 10% charged.

6. Test with a different, compatible and a good known AC adapter.

For more information on battery not charging issue, refer to the link: http://dell.to/14KkuQK

Hope this helps.

Plug the power adapter charger into the wall outlet and see if the charge light is on on the power adapter brick with out it plugged into the laptop if not then the power adapter has gone bad from being connected to another laptop of a different current rating or power port jack pin.

I had the same issue with my Dell Inspiron. I have both the N5110 and 1750. BOTH of them had the same issue, and replacing the charger on both of them solved it each time. On the 1750, the battery also needed to be replaced. You can get a new charger from dell, but that's like $80. Try one of these from amazon.
