In most cases more memory doesn't mean more speed, my computer has 1gb or ram and is perfectly usable and can run world of Warcraft. As someone else recommended Ctrl+Alt+Del if you are not using 4 GB of ram then you dont need any more its only if you were higher than this then you would need more memory. Computers do slow down over time as the user runs more software that takes up the processors time making the computer run slower, If the computer were to have the operating system re installed then the computer will perform like new making any hardware upgrades unnecessary. Often computers come with a re installer hidden on the drive so a new copy wouldn't need to be purchased making repair bills a lot lower I would consider this over ram if you need the performance the laptop once had back.

Upgrading memory from 4Gb to 8Gb will NOT speed up your computer if it has malware or hardware issues. You are best to focus on fixing the "slowness" on your laptop first...

Okay, slow down.

Before upgrading your memory beyond 4 GB, see how much it is actually using. Probably the easiest way to find that out is to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and start the task manager. Go to the Performance tab and see how much physical memory is actually being used. If the amount in use is > 3.5 GB, then a memory upgrade might very well help.

If the memory isn't running up against your 4GB configuration, adding extra isn't going to improve your performance at all. Slowness is more likely due to background programs using up computer resources (search indexers, chat clients, etc). Staples can help with that, or you can do it yourself by removing any unuseful programs you have currently installed (check the control panel).

Upgrading to 8 GB will require dumping your existing 4GB of RAM and installing two new modules. That's bad news for your PC, because 2x 4GB DDR2 modules will run you $250 or more. Staples.com doesn't list that type of memory for sale.

Taking advantage of their PC Tumeup services would be your best bet to speed things up without breaking the bank.

EDIT - based upon your Sims 3 entry:

That laptop has integrated graphics that simply aren't up to gaming standards. Being a laptop, the graphics card can't be upgraded. If you want to game, you'll need a new PC.

Why be frustrated when a simple visit, with your computer in hand, to any computer store will resolve this.

i would guess ram is not your problem but more like malware or virus. what type of security software are you using because it can dog a system. if you are using some kind of security suite it is probably overkill. sometimes backup what you want to save and reinstall the OS it will make a real difference and save you money.
