Dell XPS Laptop Burning Smell?
Hey,
I have recently smelt a burning smell coming from my laptop. It is a Dell XPS M1530. This has happened twice now, the second time happened after playing GTA IV. I was also using a laptop cooler at the time.
Surely, a laptop should not emit a burning smell, especially when using a cooler?!
Does anyone know what this is?

GTA IV is pretty demanding on graphics hardware if I recall correctly. It wouldn't surprise me if your graphics card might be overheating a bit -- the 1530 isn't the greatest on market, by any means.
A notebook cooler generally improves a laptop's cooling ability by providing better airflow, but it certainly doesn't make it immune.
It's also possible that the heat inside the laptop is burning something else -- perhaps a stray wisp of dust or an insect. What kind of burning smell are you noticing? Burnt electronics have a VERY distinctive smell, as opposed to other substances.

Could be dust on the hot parts of the inside. You may want to get some compressed air and blow out the vents on the bottom and side of the laptop.

Some of Dell's XPS line of laptops had a defect in the graphics processing chip which caused it to overheat. There is currently a recall for it. I would suggest looking into if your model is affected and sending it in for a new one. Otherwise, blow it out with can of air, dust in the air path of a laptop will cause a lot more trouble than in a desktop.

If you bought it less than a year ago from dell or you extended the warranty, don't worry much. Dell will send someone to your home to replace any part that gets damaged. You might wanna contact dell to see if they can send someone to check it out. It could be some rubber or wires burning because of the extra heat from the cpu and video card during gaming.
