If you can turn it on--before the screen lights up(during boot up) there should be a directive that says system restore- press F 10. You only have about 2 seconds to do this--if you are too slow, turn it off then do it again. If it wont start up at all, you might be able to borrow an XP disc from a friend, then put your product number in where it asks for it.

i'm unsure precisely what's happening, yet attempt unplugging the demanding force and notice if the laptop will go after the cd, then plug it in speedy as quickly because it gets the cd known. Then start up and installation or fix. i've got performed that under particularly distinctive circumstances. you additionally can attempt to get it as properly from the cd instead of the demanding force by ability of changing the boot order interior the bios. Get into bios once you first turn on the laptop by ability of hitting the foremost they provide for a pair seconds, oftentimes f10 or f12 or delete or some thing. Then discover the section for boot order, etc. and positioned the cd first and/or disable the demanding force from the record. it particularly is assuming your bios is working properly.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? Does the laptop have a recovery partition?
If safe mode doesn't help, and you have no recovery partition, try contacting HP and see if you can buy a recovery set. It it's too old, you probably can't. (I'm assuming you never made the recovery set you're supposed to make when you first get any hp.)
So, and I know you see this coming, if none of the above works, you're looking at $$$ to get a new copy of xp installed on your laptop.

no i think you will need the xp disc you can call hp and they will send it to you for 10 dollars, (thats what they told me, but mine came with it already. i took mine to geek squad and it end up costing me 290.00 , they had to replace the hard drive, because it wouldn't boot from the disc. i would take it to a computer repair shop before considering geek squad.

Using another computer download ubuntu or some other free linux distro and use that. It is free but will take some getting used to.
