Question:
How to boost broadband speed without getting a new laptop?

Hi,

I'm currently paying for BT Infinity Broadband, which should be up to 40mb. I'm only getting around 17 on a good day, and the BT engineer who came out to test the line said it's to do with my laptop, which is an HP G56 and a couple of years old. He said it's either because the laptop is running too many programs in the background or the wireless card is too old.

Is there a way I can receive the optimal speed (33-36mb on my line) without needing to change my laptop, as I quite like this one!

Any help would be great,

Kirsty.

A new laptop wont increase the internet speed. That engineer is crazy. Use task manager to check whether background programs are accessing the internet. If they are then you can simply uninstall them(dont allow them access by changing the settings of those programs or blocking them through your antivirus.) OR you can just once format the laptop. You should also remove the temporary internet files, cookies, internet history because they tend to slow down the internet. You should perform a DISK CLEANUP.

The BT engineer is an idiot!

Your laptop has very little to do with your broadband speed. Granted, that if you actually do have a dozen or so processes running, it may cause the laptop to lag, but it won't affect your broadband speed.

My guess is he couldn't be bothered to find the source of the problem and blamed your laptop.

Two years isn't that old.

Test your actual speed here:

Run several tests at differing times. Then call BT with your findings and insist they fix it☺

First-rate query. Due to the fact you're a pupil, why not go the actual low-cost route so we can prevent a bunch of money. After you stated directional and omni-directional antennas, I heard cha-ching. Freecycle yahoo groups. Get a used Linksys 54g router, which that you could even purchase at nice purchase and reflash the firmware using DD-WRT which overwrites the CISCO software with a customized linux platform. This may unleash your router to its full abilities. That you can flip it right into a single entry point or a Repeater, which is strictly what you are looking for. What it does, the router connects to the wi-fi internet connection downstairs and declares it on another access factor identify for upstairs. Seeing that the Linksys 54g has omni-directional antennas you are going to be capable to get 360 insurance policy. I might not recommend directional flat pannel antennas for you configuration and design. Omni is the great solution to go. Additionally, i wouldn't feel Virgin both! The router controls how many MAC addresses are allowed on the community. Considering the fact that it is a Virgin router, that may be... Nevertheless, in the event you use the aforementioned resolution, the Linksys 54g would best soak up ONE MAC handle, at the same time serving to many, many clients underneath it. If you do not need to handle the headache of loading custom software, then chose option #1 which is the equal special solution. #1 or my advice is the endorsed solution! Good good fortune.
