Generally speaking, there is no danger at all. They are called a laptop for a reason, because you can hold them in your lap. The only problem you might notice is that it begins to get hot, probably because having it on your lap or stomach could block off some air vents. If it begins to get too hot, then place it on a desk or other hard surface for a little while to cool down.

The reason it is dangerous is because a lot of times people end up blocking the vents when they do this, and the laptop can overheat. Cloth restricts air flow, so vents on the bottom of your laptop can get blocked. Buying a cheap lap desk or just using a large book to set your laptop on is the best remedy, because this allows air to get to the vents keeping your laptop (and you) cool.

dangerous for the laptop? or ...

This probably has a lot to do with the age/condition of the laptop.

Your laptop could overheat, but it will shutdown before it does any damage to the machine, you may also get a "thermal event" error.

Personally, If it were me and I was concerned about the heat on my lap for other reasons, I would get a cooling pad or some kind of buffer between the laptop and me!
