A dell laptop can be equipped with a BIOS password, which is a password that's part of the laptop itself, not the operating system installed on the laptop's hard drive. This password adds an extra degree of protection against hackers and thieves and prevents a thief from digitally accessing the data on the hard drive. Because a BIOS password is part of the dell laptop and not the operating system, it is difficult but possible to reset with the right tools and basic technical knowledge.

Items you will need

Phillips screwdriver

Open the access panel to the password reset jumper if your dell laptop has one. Consult your manual for the access panel's location. Some access panels have a tab you slide, while others are held in place with a screw.

Step 2

Pry the plastic cover off the reset jumper with your fingernail. The reset jumper is a small pin port labeled "PSWD" with three pins. Put the plastic back onto the jumper over pin 1 and 2 instead of 2 and 3. Wait 90 seconds.

Step 3

Pry the plastic off the reset jumper again and place it back onto the number 2 and 3 pins. Turn the laptop on. Repeat step 2 if the password is still present. Leave the plastic clip on pins 1 and 2 for a longer duration than last time.

Without a PSWD Reset Jumper

Step 1

Locate the reserve battery, also known as the CMOS battery, if your dell laptop is not equipped with a password reset jumper. The CMOS battery's location varies among dell laptop models. Consult your manual for the battery's location on your specific dell laptop model. Many dell reserve batteries are located underneath the main laptop battery. Remove the main battery and look for a sticker under it with instructions on removing the secondary CMOS battery.

Step 2

Remove your dell's reserve battery per the instruction manual or sticker located under the main battery. Removing the reserve battery resets the laptop's BIOS password. Wait 90 seconds, then replace the reserve battery. Reconnect the main battery.

Step 3

Press the "Power" button to turn the laptop on.

When your dell laptop display the SERVICE TAG followed by:

( 1D3B ) is because it is requesting a bios password and if the password came as invalid password 3 times it will shut down for one of the 3 reasons:

1: typed the wrong password 3 times

2: typed the right password but forgot to press and hold Ctrl and then press enter twice.

3: your laptop's bios version has been updated and the password changed to a new scheme.

Solution: http://biosremoval.com can provide to you both bios passwords if required.

remember that if you laptop has never been bios updated

you need a password from the older scheme.

if your laptop's bios password was recently updated then you need a bios password from the new scheme.

both password are generated from different system.

note: replacing the lcd screen will not help,

Using a new laptop charger with higher voltage does not reset bios passwords,

buying a new motherboard will help but it is not necessary

password removal with a usb keyboard works better

Before we start I want to say that your laptop might have a bios password locked, and a hard drive password locked, it is also possible that you may have a windows password set on this computer, but anyways

I have two things for you to try. It is a bugger to get the password out on the dell Laptop. Here is a couple of things that I have tried with some success.

Next power the machine to boot into windows. If your drivers are in for the wireless or Lan card open internet explorer and navigate to dell Laptop.com and select suppport, select downloads and enter 6530b. it will take to to page to select the Operating system your using. Select your Operating system and on the driver page you need download the fingerprint reader driver, dell Laptop ProtectTools Security Manager 4.10 and dell Laptop ProtectTools BIOS Configuration. Install the fingerprint driver (if needed) dell Laptop Protect Tools software and dell Laptop ProtectTools BIOS Configuration . After reboot run dell Laptop ProtectTools Security Manager For Administrators and choose Bios configuration. You will see at the top a place for you to enter a password for the BIOS however BIOS will not give you this option alone so set your new BIOS Password and when you restart the machine press F10 to get bios setup, enter your password and choose "User Management" delete the user under Protect tools User. select reset fingerprint reader and under TPM select "reset to factory defaults".

DESCRIPTION:

If the BIOS administrator password is not set, and dell Laptop ProtectTools security is enabled in Security Manager, then you may not be able to enter the Computer Setup utility at startup as a BIOS administrator. You will only be allowed to enter the setup as a ProtectTools user with limited access.

SCOPE:

The specific notebook PCs affected by this issue are listed in the Hardware Platforms Affected section at the bottom of this advisory.

RESOLUTION:

To resolve this issue, create a BIOS administrator password and delete previous ProtectTools user logs by following this procedure:

1. Download and install the latest SSM utility (dell Laptop System Software ManagerVERSION: 2.10 Rev.A SP42536

2. Navigate to c:\Program Files\dell Packard\SSM .

3. Access biosconfigutility.exe to reset the BIOS administrator password.

a. From a command prompt, navigate to the SSM folder.

b. Type biosconfigutility.exe to start the utility. A list of commands displays.

c. Type /newsetuppassword:"password" to create a new BIOS administrator password.

d. Close the command window.

4. Restart the notebook PC and press F2 at startup.

5. Log in using the new BIOS administrator password.

6. Choose User Management and delete any previous ProtectTools users.

7. Save the new settings and exit startup.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The only way to reset your windows password 100% safe is to use a software called Reset Password Pro.

The software allows you to create a boot-disk, that can be made on a CD/DVD or USB stick. The boot-disk can then be inserted into any locked machine, and it's a simple case of pressing reset. Here is their official site: http://www.resetwindowspass.com

Assuming that you have the bios password follow the steps below

if you don't have the bios password get it from here: http://www.biospro.com/

Disabling the Setup Password If You Have Access to the Current Password

Step 1

Power down your computer. Start the PC up again, pressing the "F2" key as soon as it powers up, to enter the BIOS setup program.

Step 2

Enter the current setup password to access the settings screen. Use the arrow keys to highlight "Setup password," and use the left and right cursor keys to change to setting to "not enabled."

Step 3

Press the "Esc" key to close the system setup program. Ensure you select the option to save your changes. Your computer will restart and the setup password will be disabled.

Disabling the Setup Password If the Current Password Has Been Lost

Step 1

Power down your PC and disconnect the main power cord. Open the computer case and touch a metal surface on the outer casing of the computer to ground yourself, preventing damage to any internal components.

Step 2

Look on the green motherboard for a small plastic "jumper" block connecting two pins labelled "PSWD." Carefully remove the jumper block connecting the two pins. Replace the PC cover and re-connect the computer's power cord.

Step 3

Power up the computer, holding "F2" as soon as it starts up to enter the BIOS setup program. Use the arrow keys to highlight "Setup password," and ensure it is set to "not enabled." Press the "Esc" key to close the BIOS setup program.

Step 4

Power down the computer, disconnect it from the power source and remove the cover. As before, touch a metal surface on the outer casing of the computer in order to ground yourself, thus preventing damage to any internal components. Replace the small plastic jumper connecting the two "PSWD" labelled pins. Close the computer cover.

Step 5

Power up your PC. The setup password should now be disabled.

You have to contact Dell. There's no way around it. Only they can provide one. It's not like a desktop where you can reset the jumpers
