It's a 2 year old hp. Just used for internet, iTunes, school documents, etc. No gaming. No extras added.
It's always on the computer desk, propped up so the fan can work properly. For some reason, when turned on, it takes 20 minutes at most to get really hot. The touchpad, and area on either side of the touchpad are so warm that it gets annoying. Help!

yes Tony is correct buy a can of blowoff avail at officemax or your local computer store

After 2 years the thermal paste on the processor and video chips are about gone i would have a techy friend apply more for you or your local computer shop if they have a laptop tech can do it normally to open a lap the minimum charge will be atleast 50$

Edited to add: you say it is a HP if it is a DV Series such as dv2000, dv6000 etc get new thermal paste on the vid chip asap the dv series are known for bad video chips that when over heated become loose from the board which would require a reflow which is very expensive so to prevent this apply new thermal paste right away

Edited again to add do not use blowoff while the laptop is on as there could be some condensed moisture that comes out of the can aswell but dries very quickly but still to be safe do it while it is off blow it into the vents on the bottom and side

It's because of the room temperature, its fan (it might not be working properly) or maybe because of the surface... if it's, in any way, not STABLE or ENTIRELY FLAT, that may be why - you might want to consider moving it to another surface to see if that's what's creating the problem.

Try blowing in the back air vents and see if you can remove any dust.

It is probably because your laptop fan is full of dust...

you should use compressed air or blower(with blower use it carefully it worked for me twice)

and cheers :)
