Best laptop with specs given by college?

This computer will be used for programming, and such in college for my major. My school has sent me these recommended specs sent from the engineering an computing department (computer science major) Intel i5/i7 or AMD equivalent
8GB of RAM or higher
Display, 15" or larger
Hard Drive, 1+ TB Hard Drive or higher unless SSD
Video Card, 512 MB Video Card or higher
Sound, Optional
Operating System, Windows 7
My budget is $1000-$2000. They do not recommend a mac. My predicament is finding a powerful laptop like as described but with good portability and battery life.

The best mainstream laptop mfgs are, in order, Lenovo, Asus, HP, Samsung.

Avoid Toshiba, Acer and Gateway.

For off-brand high-end machines, I suggest MSI. I don't really know the others that well, other than that Razer and Alienware are highly overpriced.



Take a look at the Lenovo Y50 and Y510p. A couple of the Y510p's are on a very nice sale right now.

Since you are a software dev student, then you are obligated to know computers. Go on sites like, cyberpowerpc.com and xoticpc.com and customize and choose.

Asus ROG series, MSI gt series, Sager NP7358, Clevo W350S come to mind. They all got good cooling, very good hardware for all needs. But they are like 8 lbs. But you'll need that weight to exercise when you carry it around, since you will sit on your butt most of the time.
