The laptops should meet your needs at university as they are both good computers. As an engineering major, you may want to upgrade your RAM and Hard drive if possible (an external hard drive would work as well for storing extra data). You will likely be using programs such as Matlab or Mathematica during the course of your study to run calculations and simulations; the extra RAM will help these types of applications run smoothly.

For me the operative be conscious on your question is uni. Laptops are fairly stolen, computers not everywhere close to so alluring. Like for like computers are more cost-effective. You pay for the miniaturisation in a pc. Sorry if i'm being glaring the following, that's only that the potential of robbery is so tremendous, no rely how careful you imagine you're. So for me get a short personal computer at a life like fee and with success you isn't replacing it because some ars* has nicked it. Novatech do good deals and performance actual loose after sales help. loose shipping too.

Both of them are good. 3gb ram promises good lag free environment.

Processor is good as well.

The harddisk is only 80gb which might get filled up easily considering the fact that you are a student. Vista occupies a lot of space. So try getting more hard disk space if you can. Check the site below for a comparison survey between Mac and other computers. Mac is preferred by students and I feel you can look into it. But overall the above configs are good.
