1. Borrow another screen and use the laptop to drive it (via the blue plug on the back of your laptop).

2. Or, take the hard drive out, put it into a USB caddy, use another computer to read the files and copy them.

Hello Kirsty,

If you have another monitor or TV, most notebooks have external VGA/HDMI connectors that you can hookup to a TV or external monitor for more of a dual-display setup. In your case, it would be the only display... That might help you on this issue. Typically if its a cheap enough laptop($200-300), you can just remove the hard drive and pop it into the new laptop of the same model without many problems, if any at all.

However, have you called ACER to determine if you can get it replaced by warranty?

Best Regards

UPDATE:

This may be your motherboard is shot if its standard builtin Intel/AMD graphics. The best way is to get a SATA to USB converter and hook it up as an External Drive to a new computer. Your monitor might not be bad, it could be the onboard Video Card thats fried up from excessive heat.

edit: ScienceGal - That blue tipped cord you're thinking of is VGA, not USB.

Yes.

There are several methods depending on your specific hardware on your laptop and hardware you have around.

1. Does your laptop have any external video output ports such as VGA, DVI, or HDMI, if so simply connect the appropriate cable to a compatible screen or TV and turn it on and it should just show up if you're lucky.

2. Remove the harddrive, look up where you hard drive is located and with a screw driver take off the right screws and remove your hard drive, you should then be able to hook it into an already working desktop and once you turn on that computer you should see your drive and be able to access all of your files

3. if you're not a techy and don't feel confident in doing this you don't have many other options, you could give up, or pay a lot of money for a place like geek squad to get it for you, or maybe post on craigslist and offer $30 for anyone who can backup your files for you.

Connect your acer laptop to another computer or a plain monitor. (Use a blue USB cord for this)

Most laptops will automatically display to the other monitor. IF NOT: You may need to eyeball as best as you can the display area, despite the broken screen; and select "multiple displays"-

Then use the other display to move your files to a flash drive.

Hope that helps!

you can use a hdmi cable from laptop to television or any other screen .

If documents are important go take hard disk out and using connector cables transfer data to new pc .

Else you could also use wifi or bluetooth remote host ftp server connection .

Easiest is probably remove the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure for the drive and hook it up to another machine.

You could also probably use a 2nd monitor to work with the files, but that might not work if you have to change settings.
