Firstly, update your antivirus and remove the virus. Instal "K light mega codec". Its the best codec which can play everything. Download it from http://www.download.com

First of all, make sure you obliterate the virus. You don't want it damaging/altering/overwriting anything.
I must say I am rather impressed at this issue, the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack which you have should allow you to open just about anything. It might be possible there is a conflict with other drivers, so I reccomend you to check if you have any other codec packs installed in your computer. If you do, remove them and make sure you only leave the K-Lite pack.
Reinstall K-Lite from a new installer download, just to make sure the first installer didn't get messed up. Additionally, mark all of the available codec options during the install process, maybe you didn't install one of the codecs that you needed to use.
Check the properties of the files that are causing you trouble, maybe they are set to be opened with the wrong application. K-Lite can also install a player that will be helpful, it tends to work more efficiently than the others.

well...
Some of those video files might not *be* video files. If you are downloading movies, you might be downloading garbage files that some people share just to bump up their ratios.
You say there has been a virus attack lately. Well, It isn't attacking everyone. If you are finding that you have been dealing with virus issues, you might be in need of reinstalling your Operating System. You know... backing up your data, and performing a factory System Recovery. After that, install VLC and nothing else. Don't bother with codecs or codec packs. Most of them aren't even actual codec packs... only malware and spyware. You don't NEED any codec pacs with VLC. It plays everything without requiring you to download any codecs.
I know, I know... that sounds like sooooo much work. Well, it is less work than going crazy downloading every cleaning tool known to man, only to find out that you STILL have corrupted system files. A factory recovery will return your laptop to a state where it works. From there, be smart.
