When i switch on my ibm thinkpad it comes up with a black screen and white writing saying.... initalising and establishing link........ then it goes to another black screen with white writing saying.... Current boot order and 7 devices with a status by each of them either saying Device Not Found or No Valid Operating System

Below are two things excluded from boot order
1)ATA HDD2
2)ATAPI CD1

Also at the bottom of the screen it says
Press F1 at Power-on. Select Start up

Whats going on?

Most likely your HDD is boned but you should put in a windows disk and set the ATAPI CD 1 to the first boot slot and see if it boots up the windows setup. If it does then if you have nothing to keep on the disk then select format FAT and let it do it's think. If there is then select and install windows on top of your windows so you can get in there and get your stuff off before going back and formatting and reinstalling.

You can go through the repair and recovery method but usually this way or using a Linux LiveCd to access the disk and extract is quicker

The operating system has corrupt start up files.

Press F8 at start up to enter start options, choose safe mode with networking back up every thing of importance then use a set of recovery disc and do a system repair or install new operating system using the recovery disc. set.

you won't be able to easily bang a hardchronic from one laptop into yet another laptop and assume it to artwork. you've something said as HAL (Hardware precis Layer) which includes information of each and each of the hardware on you laptop. of route this HAL won't be able to artwork with a completely distinct set of hardware in yet another laptop. you may boot from a homestead windows installation CD and do an total deploy on the 2d hand laptop.
