How will you know that it's already time to change a laptop battery?

I own a hp pavilion dv6000.
My laptop battery is 17 months old.
My laptop comes with a "hp battery check" program which you can run MANUALLY to check the current status of your battery.
When I used the program to check the current status of my battery, the response is "REPLACE" which means that I am advised to replace my laptop battery.

I wonder if it's really the right time to change my laptop battery because I can still use my laptop running on battery power for about an hour. But sometimes, when the battery meter is still for example 28% after some minutes approximately 4-5 mins the battery power turns 5% which I guess is normal for an AGED BATTERY like that of mine.

I would want to know your opinions because I know that not all laptops have this BATTERY CHECK PROGRAM and for sure there are other ways to know when it is really time to change a laptop battery.I mean the natural and conventional way of determining it.

Best way is to leave your battery charging until it's full, and see how long it takes before your laptop turns off from low power (ignore the %).

Sometimes if you do this it can fix the timer. There is often no way of knowing how much power is left in a battery. Most devices such as phones and some laptops just guess the battery life based on how long you have used it for. Inside the battery is a chip that calculates how much power it thinks you have, and if it gets it wrong, you see your power level jump from like 30% to 5% instantly (because it guessed more power than it actually has). Sometimes the opposite happens.

If you are getting an hour out of it and that's enough, then there is no reason to change it. Gradually though the time will get lower and lower until eventually it is unusable.

I would say, change it when the battery doesn't last long enough for you to use.

I wouldnt ever trust a program to test a battery because it could be wrong, i would go on your own knowlege of how long it lasts, if it only gets 1/4 of the time from a charge that you got when you bought it would i say replace it

By rule of thumb, i would let it go til it wa only lasting half as long as when new. Of course you can never replace it if you want to be tethered to a wall outlet. When you do though look for a 9 cell and you will get much better battery life.

I have a laptop I bought over 5 years ago. I've never had to replace the battery.

I guess you would replace it when it dies.

Battery replacement should only be needed if you have a very low-grade battery.

Sometimes LapTop manufactures will use low grade batts to cut prices a little bit.

I wouldn't replace it if you don't think you need it.The battery check is an obscure luxury, and I say don't use it.Change it when you feel you need to.

if you see the battery approx time remaining is moving count down very fast then use it till you give up

but if you are a heavy worker then change it or your comp might run out of battery when you need it most and your comp will shut down and you'll loose your work so

according to the answer do any of the points given above
