I don't think you can even find Internet Explorer 5.5 for the Mac any more. At least Microsoft has officially discontinued its development and distribution. And that was in 2003.

Why would your college courses require the use of such a dinosaur? I don't think IE 5.5 would even run under Mac OS X.

Safari (the browser that ships with Mac OS X) has a "hidden" menu, referred to as the "Debug" menu that includes a "user agent" feature that lets Safari behave (and report to web sites) that it is a different browser than Safari! To enable this, you must use the Terminal.app program (found in your Utilities folder). At the terminal prompt, just type

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

and press Enter. When you restart Safari you will have a new menu on the top of the screen Named "Develop." Under this menu is a long list of "User Agent" identities. One of them is Internet Explorer 5.5!

To revert back to the standard menu structure, simply run the command again, using a zero instead of a one as the last argument.

Microsoft stopped developing IE for the Mac at 5.2.3. There were no versions made for the Mac after that point in time. If you want that last version of IE you can get i here, http://internet-explorer.en.softonic.com/mac - it won't damage your MacBook, it just might not run certain web pages or things very well.

You should try FireFox or Safari, the most up to date versions, to try and run these college course materials. One of the two should suffice for your needs.

If you absolutely have to run IE 5.5 or higher, then you need to deal with installing Windows on your MacBook. Then you can run it through virtualization (VMWare Fusion or Parallels) or dual boot (setup using the Boot Camp Assistant that comes with Leopard). To do this though you will need a licensed copy of Windows (I'd recommend XP or 7 RC) and a bunch of free hard drive space (if you're only concerned about Windows/IE then about 10GB should be fine, if you want to install other windows things, then more).

Use Firefox and it should be compatible. If not, you can download IE, but it's no longer supported. You will have to get Parrallels and run Windows XP on your Macbook to run it.

Internet explorer for mac is out of date and old, PROBABLY the internet explorer 5.5 or higher means that you need any web browser, if not - tell someone at your collage that they need to get with the real world, and stop the activeX crap that makes it work. Microsoft's taken their IE for mac page down, but you can find it at the internet archive http://web.archive.org/web/20050831004157/http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/internetexplorer/internetexplorer.aspx?pid=internetexplorer you can't get the windows binaries, they won't work
