Question:
How do I buy the correct USB card port for my Compaq laptop?
?

I just bought a used Compaq Evo N1015v and it has no USB slots installed, so I'm planning on buying the hardware to add them. Do I need a specific type or model for my computer or will any Compaq USB card work? I'm not sure if 'USB card' is the correct term... What I need is the piece of hardware with the two USB input slots that would go next to the CD drive.

If you could just point me in the right direction I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm afraid the previous answer is correct, in that this model Compaq already has USB ports.

See? There in the diagram of the back of the unit, are two USB ports.

Now, the ports YOU were asking about, the ones on the *left* hand side of the laptop next to the disk drive, are called PCMCIA slots, or PC card slots. You would purchase a PCMCIA USB card... demonstrated by this Google search here for that exact term...

No, I'm not telling you where to buy them... I'm just showing you how a search for that phrase turns up multiple retailers... thus if you were to go to a store where they sell computer hardware and you were to ask for a PCMCIA USB card, that is what they would turn up for you. That is the card that slides into the computer, and provides 2 to 4 USB slots.

There is an Ebay search for it.

Your laptop has a 32-bit CardBus (Type II) slot. So you need a 32-bit CardBus USB adapter. They're widely available on eBay, from NewEgg, Amazon, and so on.

Make sure the card you get is a 32-bit CardBus card with USB 2.0 ports. Otherwise, your performance will suffer. On eBay, you can search "32-bit USB cardbus 2.0". The cheapest one is currently around $7, buy it now, free shipping.

To answer your question...NO, you need to get something specific for that laptop model.

On the other hand, this whole operation might not even be possible since many laptops without USB ports are so old that they do not support any kind of upgrade.

I would suggest TigerDirect.com they have a great selection and you can chat with a rep online.
