I'd like to find a way to boot from a USB stick, as its CDROM doesn't work very properly.

In the BIOS, one of the boot options is "+Removable Device" (the others are "CDROM", "+Hard Disk", "Built-in LAN". The + means that it's expandable, and when you expand it in the BIOS setup, the Hard Disk option lists the one disk installed, and the Removable Device lists "Floppy Drive"

Is there any way to make the system recognize a USB stick as a removable device (and show it as available for boot)?

The laptop (1ghz, 512MB RAM) uses Phoenix BIOS (BIOS revision KC.M1.10) and it doesn't have any operation system installed at the moment (but linux CDs can be used with its lazy CDROM) :)

Sometimes the BIOS won't show a USB boot option until one is attached, try that.

Hi,

Ultimate Boot CD runs independently of any operating system. It will boot from any Intel-compatible machine, regardless of whether DOS/Windows/Linux/BeOS is installed on the machine. However, you do need an operating system and a ISO-capable CD writer software to create the Ultimate Boot CD from the downloaded ISO image file.

An ISO image file is a platform-independent way to describe the contents of a CD. There are tools on every operating system to recreate a CD from a given ISO image file. Hence it is a good way to distribute CDs over the Internet without having to snail mail the physical disc.

Here is some software you can use to burn ISO image files under Windows:

1. Using Nero Express 5

2. Using Nero Nero SmartStart and Nero Express 6

3. Using Nero 7 Ultra Edition

4. Using Easy Media Creator

5. Using various freeware for burning an ISO image to CD or DVD

well the only answer i can come up with is to reformat your usb drive to be a bootable device and from there you can add hyrens onto it, but if you want windows or any other OS, i suggest you dont because you can easily and accidently pull the usb and it could corrupt your system as the core files for the os that the computer is using is no longer available, thus, bluescreen or failure.

so if your trying to use the usb for a bootable version of hyrens (password/bios recovery, change passwords through DOS [well it looks like DOS, or am i wrong]) then a cd or a usb stick works well.

Older computer bioses did not have the USB boot option. Not sure if you can update your bios to give you this option.

If your laptop's CD-ROM is removable, you may be able to purchase a DVD for it.

Google the make and model of your laptop as follows:
