I purchased a BIOS update from eSupport.com. When I ran the update, everything (yep . . .everything) stopped. eSupport's recommendation: a) remove the CMOS battery for several hours.

OK so I feel like totally stupid. Where is the cmos battery for an acer aspire 1690 laptop? I've opened the multiple panels under the unit - nothing. I've removed the keyboard - nothing.

Acer eSupport is totally lame and won't answer me. Is this a closely guarded secret? Was it abducted by a space alien? Where the heck is the CMOS battery?

Question #2: Is the Acer BIOS chip a plugin or soldered chip?

I'd appreciae a timely reply. Thanks for the assist.

I'm trying to find a picture of the motherboard. Hopefully that will shed some light on its location. Here is a webpage that shows different typical CMOS batteries that are used. http://www.computerhope.com/help/cmos.htm

Weird! I got a link for you so maybe you can view it. I was unable to see the full picture. Just search google images for aspire 1690 and it is the first picture given. Follow the link to pc-mob.com to view the full image and I get denied the ability to view the picture enlarged. Here are the links that I saw a photo:

The manual is absolutely useless!

I recommend you look at some websites where laptops have been dismantled for repairs. The battery will not be located exactly the same place in every model, but it gives you an idea. While you are in there you can see whether or not the BIOS chip is soldered or not.

Also, go to a couple of computer repair shops and see what they can give you for advice. It may be something they can do for cheap as well if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

Sorry I wasn't much help.

try taking the ram and battery out then leaving it for about day then try and replace them again if this does not work then you have probuly got static damage then the only thing u can do is to try it will the old stuff if that STILL does not work then i would tke it to pc shop to see what the real problem is.
